Anything sharp

Knives, scissors and letter openers carry a widespread association with cutting a relationship. Whether or not you hold the belief, many recipients do, and the gift creates awkwardness rather than pleasure.

Anything that implies criticism

This is the one that causes the most quiet offence:

• Weight loss or fitness items — unless explicitly requested
• Skin lightening products — avoid entirely
• Anti-ageing products for a younger woman
• Cleaning or kitchen items for a new bride — a common misfire that reads as a comment on her expected role
• Deodorant, mouthwash or anything hygiene-adjacent

The test: could this be read as saying something should be fixed? If yes, skip it.

Anything with a size you are guessing

Match the gift to the relationship, not to your budget

An expensive gift to someone who cannot reciprocate creates obligation rather than pleasure. This matters especially with domestic staff, junior colleagues and less-well-off relatives. Generous but not burdensome is the target.
